The Latest at SpoontiquesIf you've been procrastinating getting some of the Spoontiques lighthouses that you've wanted, you might be wise not to delay any longer. In the 2005 catalog from Spoontiques, many of the lighthouses have been, without warning, deleted from the picture catalog and their price sheet. For the second straight year, there are no sets of new releases. What's going on here? A few short years back, Spoontiques, like all lighthouse collectible companies, was rapidly expanding their inventory of lighthouses, with two large sets of new releases annually. With the rapid downfall of the collectible market in recent years, sales of Spoontiques lighthouses are way down. Why would collectors stop buying? Several reasons; (1) bad U.S. economy, (2) collectors were running out of room to display their lighthouses, (3) less travel after 9/11, so people are not visiting lighthouses that are far from home (most collectors buy what they've seen), and (4) the most popular lighthouses were obviously replicated first; thus, new releases, each year, became lesser and lesser known lighthouses; which would certainly lead to less sales. Everybody seems to have stopped collecting at the same time, and there are very few new collectors to pick up the slack. Can it be reversed? It's doubtful that Spoontiques will ever make any more new releases, unless a retailer foots the bill (purchases a large initial quantity of lighthouses). Spoontiques agreed to make Sandy Neck Light, MA only because Cape Annie's Lighthouse purchased the first 200 statues. Old collectors will once again have to be enticed to buy lighthouses, and a resurgence in lighthouse preservation efforts will be necessary to create new collectors. Here is that list we promised you, of the lighthouses that Spoontiques has abruptly discontinued. If any of your favorites appear on this list, we highly recommend grabbing them from a retail store or web site that has them in stock, as none of us will be able to re-stock them again.
