When God "Doesn't Come Through"
by Randy Frazee
Text: John 9:1-41
Topic: Why God doesn't always provide what we want
Big Idea: God works to accomplish his purposes.
Keywords: God, goodness of; Suffering

Recently God "didn't come through" for me
  • Illustration: Frazee relates how he struggled to understand why, when he prayed at his mother's deathbed that God would give her 18 more years of life, like Hezekiah did in 2 Kings for his life, God granted Hezekiah's request, but Frazee's mother died.
The situation
  • "As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, 'Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents that he was born blind?'"
    - John 9:1-2
  • "'Neither this man nor his parents sinned,' said Jesus, 'but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.'"
    - John 9: 3
The miracle
  • The central character in John 9 is Jesus; the blind man is a beneficiary of the work and glory of Jesus.
  • "[Jesus] spit on the ground and made some mud with the saliva and put it on the man's eyes. 'Go,' he said to him. 'Wash in the Pool of Siloam.' So the man went and washed and came home seeing."
    - John 9: 6-7
The response
  • The skeptical religious leaders demand to hear the story from the healed man's parents, who tell the Jews to ask their son himself.
    - John 9: 18-23
  • The healed man facetiously asks the Jews if they want to hear the story again because they want to become Jesus' disciples, to which the angry religious leaders call him a sinner and cast him out.
    - John 9: 24-34
The lesson
  • Jesus finds the healed man and when Jesus asks him if he believes in the Son of Man, the healed man says, "Lord, I believe!" Jesus tells the Pharisees standing nearby that since they can still see, their sin remains.
    - John 9: 35-41
  • The blind man is healed to signal Jesus' ability and desire to heal our greater and more long-lasting problem of spiritual blindness.
  • How many times does God have to heal us before we say he is good? The answer to the question is once. God has to heal us once because there is only one healing that is essential, and that is spiritual healing.
